Erik Schmidt (*1968 in Herford, lebt in Berlin) reflektiert in vielen seiner Werke Großstädte als vitale Impulsgeber besonderer urbaner Lebensweisen. Dabei beobachtet er sehr genau die verschiedenen Facetten von Urbanität, die sowohl das Potenzial für Konflikte bergen als auch einen bestimmten Lifestyle hervorbringen können. Der aktive, handelnde Mensch, der sich suchend bis souverän durch das Dickicht der Großstädte bewegt und sich eigene Plätze und Freiräume erobert, gehört zu den zentralen Figuren seiner Filme und Gemälde. Letztere basieren immer auf seinen eigenen Fotografien. Diese können wie Skizzen als Vorlagen dienen oder werden direkt auf Leinwand gedruckt und anschließend sehr pastos, farbenprächtig und mit dynamischer Pinselführung übermalt, was seine neueren Werke in besonderer Weise kennzeichnet.

Wir freuen uns daher sehr, dass Erik Schmidt für Provinz nun zwei Motive ausgewählt hat, die Skater in Paris zeigen. Sie erscheinen jeweils in sechs unterschiedlich übermalten Variationen.

Aktuell widmet das KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Berlin dem Künstler eine eindrucksvolle Einzelausstellung mit dem Titel „The Rise and the Fall of Erik Schmidt“, die im Anschluss im EACC Castelló in Spanien zu sehen ist.

Die Werke von Erik Schmidt sind in zahlreichen öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten, z.B. MARTa Herford, Leopold-Hoesch-Museum Düren, Sammlung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Deutsche Bank Collection, Fundació la CAIXA, Barcelona, Spain, Berlinische Galerie, Belvedere, Wien, Reina Sofia, Madrid. 2012 und 2013 widmeten im das Loepold-Hoesch-Museum und das Haus am Waldsee eine Einzelausstellung.

Erik Schmidt (born 1968 in Herford, lives in Berlin) reflects on large cities in many of his works as vital catalysts for unique urban lifestyles. He closely observes the various facets of urbanity, which can both harbor the potential for conflict and give rise to a particular lifestyle. The active, proactive individual, who navigates the urban jungle with a sense of both searching and self-assurance, carving out their own spaces and freedoms, is a central figure in his films and paintings. The latter are always based on his own photographs. These can serve as sketches or are printed directly onto canvas and then painted over with thick, vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes, a characteristic feature of his more recent works.

We are therefore delighted that Erik Schmidt has selected two images of skaters in Paris for Provinz. Each image appears in six different overpainted variations.

Currently (2025-2026), the KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art in Berlin is dedicating an impressive solo exhibition to the artist, titled "The Rise and the Fall of Erik Schmidt," which will subsequently travel to the EACC Castelló in Spain.

Erik Schmidt's works are represented in numerous public collections, including MARTa Herford, the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum Düren, the Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Deutsche Bank Collection, Fundació la CAIXA in Barcelona, Spain, the Berlinische Galerie, the Belvedere in Vienna, and the Reina Sofia in Madrid. In 2012 and 2013, the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum and the Haus am Waldsee each held solo exhibitions of his work.
